About The Foodscapes Collective

The Foodscapes Collective is an independent, globally minded platform dedicated to exploring the relationships between food, people, and place. We work to deepen understanding of how food systems are lived, shaped, and transformed across cultures, landscapes, and communities.
Rather than promoting one universal vision of what food systems should be, we create space for multiple perspectives—linking on-the-ground experience with research, storytelling, and critical reflection. Our work connects practitioners, scholars, farmers, writers, and engaged citizens who are thinking carefully about agriculture, sustainability, and food justice in their own contexts.
We publish essays and articles that highlight ideas, practices, and questions emerging from foodscapes around the world. Many of these insights already exist in practice but remain underrepresented in mainstream food conversations. By sharing them, we aim to foster dialogue, curiosity, and collaboration across disciplines and geographies.
The Foodscapes Collective is intentionally collaborative and welcome contributions from individuals with diverse forms of knowledge. We believe that meaningful conversations about food are a vital first step toward informed choices and lasting, sustainable change.
What We Do
At The Foodscapes Collective, we’re passionate about uncovering the stories, innovations, and ideas shaping our global food systems. From the soil to the table, our mission is to bring you fresh perspectives and thought-provoking content about all things food and agriculture.
Mission Statement:
To inform, inspire, and connect the food and agriculture community by delivering engaging content, fostering professional networks, and promoting innovative ideas that drive sustainable development.
Who We Are
Morgane Batkai and Joel Matheson lead The Foodscapes Collective together with a shared belief that food stories matter.
While Joel and Morgane remain at the core of the project, The Foodscapes Collective is shaped by many voices. We regularly publish submissions from writers, researchers, farmers, and practitioners from across the world. (Want to write for us?)

Morgane Batkai — Co‑Founder
Morgane is a food systems thinker and researcher with a background in food studies, sustainability, and critical analysis of agriculture and policy. Her work is driven by curiosity, rigor, and a commitment to understanding how power, culture, and environment shape what—and how—we eat. At The Foodscapes Collective, Morgane brings an editorial eye, academic grounding, and a global perspective to every piece we publish.

Joel Matheson — Co‑Founder
Joel is an agriculture and international development professional with experience spanning smallholder farming, climate‑smart agriculture, and community‑based projects across multiple countries. With a background in environmental studies and global food systems, Joel is passionate about translating complex ideas into stories that are accessible, grounded, and human. At The Foodscapes Collective, he focuses on storytelling, partnerships, and connecting food to place.
How It Started

In October 2024, Morgane and Joel met at a Food Studies conference in Portugal. Surrounded by scholars, practitioners, and storytellers from around the world, they found themselves returning to the same questions: How do we tell better stories about food and agriculture? How do we bridge academic insight with lived experience? And how do we make space for voices that are often missing from mainstream food narratives?
By December 2024, The Foodscapes Collective was founded. This platform is a passion project dedicated to thoughtful, accessible writing on food systems, agriculture, environment, and development.
Where We’re Going
The Foodscapes Collective remains an evolving project. What started as a passion has become a growing community of readers and contributors who care deeply about food and agriculture. We aim to continue expanding our reach, elevating new voices, and fostering meaningful conversations across disciplines and geographies.
