The world’s largest independent gathering of land rights advocates and experts is coming to Colombia. From June 14-19, 2025, the Global Land Forum (GLF) will bring together policymakers, grassroots organizations, researchers, and community leaders to address some of the most pressing challenges surrounding land governance.
Organized every three years by the International Land Coalition (ILC), the 10th edition of the Forum will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the European Union in Colombia, and the Centre for Research and Popular Education (CINEP), alongside a National Organizing Committee of 60 Colombian organizations.
Why Colombia?
With 41.8% of its territory in the Amazon, Colombia is the world’s second most biodiverse country. Yet, challenges related to land concentration, territorial rights, and environmental sustainability persist. The current government’s ambitious four-year plan, “Colombia, potencia mundial de la vida” (Colombia, world power of life) prioritizes agrarian reform and peace processes to address these longstanding issues.
“This Forum represents an opportunity for Colombia to reaffirm its leadership and commitment to agrarian reform,” stated Martha Carvajalino Villegas, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. “With 2025 declared the Year of Peasant, Family, Ethnic, and Community Agriculture, this event will showcase how equitable land distribution is key to food sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and inclusive rural development.”
What to Expect at GLF 2025
The Forum will feature immersive community visits, high-level discussions, and networking opportunities designed to foster collaboration and action on land governance. Key highlights include:
Community Visits (June 14-15): Participants will engage with local communities to understand Colombia’s land challenges firsthand.
Indigenous & Youth Forums (June 14-15): The inaugural Indigenous Global Forum will bring together Indigenous leaders worldwide to discuss their role in land governance.
Colombia & Latin America Day (June 16): A special opening day featuring Colombian government leaders, Indigenous authorities, and regional representatives.
Thematic Discussions (June 17-19): Panels and interactive sessions with international policymakers, land experts, and grassroots activists.
A Global Commitment to Land Rights
“Land rights are at the centre of overcoming some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” said Michael Taylor, Director of the ILC Secretariat, “there’s no better country right now than Colombia to host a celebration of our achievements and learn from each other how we can do it better.”
The European Union also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Colombia in securing fair and equitable access to land, linking conflict-affected areas with economic opportunities. “Colombia is an example that the protection of nature, peacebuilding and economic development are one and the same,” said Gilles Bertrand, EU Ambassador to Colombia.
